Biography of:
Brian Miller

Brian Miller (Tyendinaga Mohawk) was born in Greece, New York. He received his BFA from the State University of New York, College at Purchase and his MFA from Yale University. Currently he lives in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and teaches Photography at Dartmouth College.

His work has been widely exhibited in the US and Canada, published in numerous periodicals, including recent exhibits at The Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta and Raw & Co. Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio. His images have been published in numerous books and periodicals including 25 & Under: Photographers, and Doubletake.

Awards include a Ford Foundation/Phillip Morris Fellowship, a New Hampshire State Council of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, and a Leslie-Berry Digital Fellowship.

His photography is in the documentary tradition without the pretense of objectivity. The imagery is based on an event that happened in the fall of 2001 a story, which is told and then re-told. Re-telling becomes a way of remembering and a way of understanding events, which were inexplicable to begin with. The reality is this: one night he picked up a woman hitch hiking. She then stayed with him for three and a half weeks. He then returned her to the same place he found her. The rest is the story.
