A Series of Minor Miracles

In this small conceptually leather bound artbook inspired by Jan Van Eyck's 1434 masterpiece "Arnolfini Portrait," depicting a man and his pregnant wife in their bedroom; Duffy and Miller symbolize their life together in nine high-resolution photos of modern day household objects.

Ordinary things like a green dress, family dog paws, chandelier, and a nail, take on complexity when taken out of context and against perfect white backgrounds. These images suggest countless references to the Van Eyck painting, which feature for example, a dog and chandelier; likewise, Duffy fashioned a pair of wooden shoes (pattens) exactly like those worn by Van Eyck's man. The images draw power from the bold contrast between white and pure color, which is also a technique of the Dutch masters. Duffy and Miller do depart from Van Eyck in many ways, by primarily in their effort to document their own contemporary lives.
